Cycling

General

Cyclists will find many encouragements in the area. A lot of the countryside is quite flat, there are plenty of quiet lanes as alternatives to the main roads and a few cycle ways are beginning to appear.

Leisure cyclists will enjoy some pleasant scenic routes and A-to-B riders will benefit from good connections with neighbouring areas and the National Cycle Network using routes 90 and 91.

Lancashire County Council has produced a number of excellent leaflets about cycling. They include :

    'Lancashire Cycleway'
    'Cycle Rides in West Lancashire'
    'Pennine Cycleway'
Cycling Maps of Ormskirk and Skelmersdale
    'Bowland by Bike'
A range of leaflets on basic cycling information.

They can be obtained from L.C.C. information centres and on-line.

Leaflets about cycling in other areas include :

'Walking and Cycling Guide to Sefton's Natural Coast'
    'The Yorkshire Dales Cycleway'
    'The Transpennine Trail'

Southport is now a 'Cycling Town' and has produced a useful website : www.southportcycletown.gov.uk
