Green computer game
Sometimes
it
seems
as if the 'green' message is all gloom and doom. So
here's something a bit more light-hearted : a computer game called
'Fate of the World', as
reported in 'The
Guardian'.
Imagine you're
the boss of the World Trade Organisation some time in the future. It's
your job to save the world by cutting carbon emissions or allow it to
be destroyed by floods, droughts and fires.
If you limit emissions of greenhouse gases, the
global economy may collapse. But if you do nothing, the world's climate
will suffer dreadful catastrophes.
An expert on climate dynamics at Oxford University
(Dr Myles Allen) gave his reaction : "What I like about this game is
that it allows people to experience, in an idealised world, the kinds
of decisions we are likely to confront, and makes it clear that there
are no easy answers.
Here's another opinion (from Tom Chatfield, a games
expert) : If people can feel and see the evolution of variables in a
system, - such as a changing climate - it can be a better way of
learning than reading lots of scientific prose.
It's available at £14.99 : either download it or buy
at Oxfam stores. It's published by Red Redemption at www.fateoftheworld.net
The trailer looks pretty good.
